MICAH FREEMAN WALK THE LINE

A product of Atlanta’s legendary music scene, singer, rapper, songwriter and producer Micah Freeman makes a bold return with ‘Walk The Line’. It’s the artist’s first release since 2015’s The Red EP, and it showcases the eclectic mix of influences that Freemanc holds close to his heart: Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, D’Angelo, Mos Def, and Kanye West. ‘Walk The Line’ is two parts low-key groover and one part ambient dance track; a mixture which perfectly suits Freeman’s sultry voice, whether it’s his direct rap or soul-pop signing. As well as being a surefire driving anthem, this track also exposes a politically and socially conscious musician who dips into his passion for raising awareness of mental health issues within the black community and removing the stigma attached to it. In the video especially, we see alcohol, drugs, and sex used as self-medication and distraction, rather than the symbols of masculinity that they’re often mistaken for. Micah Freeman ponders his identity throughout the song, which is essentially wrapped up in the standalone line, “Maybe I’m the killer. Maybe I’m the healer, or maybe both combined.” ‘Walk The Line’ is the first song from his forthcoming I Wasn’t Born Yesterday EP, which will be out on his own label, Everpresent Records, this Autumn. - Hannah Thacker
